How often should a boiler be serviced?

Every gas and oil boiler in Ireland should be serviced once every 12 months. Annual servicing is a condition of nearly every manufacturer warranty (Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal) and is a legal requirement for landlords.

Why annual is the right interval

  • Manufacturer warranties (Worcester, Vaillant, Ideal) require yearly RGII servicing
  • Catches small faults — sticking pumps, blocked condensate, weak valves — before they fail
  • Restores efficiency: a serviced boiler runs up to 15% leaner
  • Carbon-monoxide safety check on the gas side
  • Required under Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) rules for landlords

When to service sooner

Service immediately — don't wait for the anniversary — if you notice yellow flames instead of blue, a sooty boiler casing, persistent pressure loss, kettling or rumbling noises, or a CO alarm activation. Each is a sign of unsafe combustion or imminent failure.

Related questions

Can I skip a year if the boiler is new?+

No — skipping the annual service voids the manufacturer warranty even on a brand-new boiler.

When is the best time of year to book?+

Summer or early autumn. You avoid the winter rush, your boiler is ready before cold weather hits, and you're not without heat if a part needs ordering.
