How to choose the right boiler

A quick guide so you arrive at the survey already knowing what to ask.

Combi vs System

Combi heats hot water on demand — no cylinder, ideal for 1–2 bathroom homes. System boilers feed a hot water cylinder and suit 3+ bedroom homes with higher hot-water demand.

Size by radiator count

1–10 radiators usually need a 15–21 kW boiler. 11+ radiators or larger homes typically need 24–30 kW. We size correctly during the survey — oversizing wastes gas.

Fuel type

Natural gas is the standard. LPG installs are possible — let us know on the enquiry. We do not currently install oil boilers; we focus on gas.

Flue position

External wall flues are the easiest. Roof flues and through-attic runs add labour and parts. Tell us where the current flue exits in the booking — it helps the quote accuracy.

Boiler location

Kitchen, utility, hot-press, garage and attic are all common. Moving the boiler is possible but adds pipework and time — we'll quote relocations clearly and separately.

Controls & smart heating

Building Regulations require a programmable thermostat with any new boiler. Smart controls (Nest, Hive, Bosch EasyControl, vSMART) save 15–25% on average and are easy to add.

EPH Controls Specialists

Heating controls that actually save you money

We specialise in EPH Controls — the Cork-designed, Irish-engineered heating control range used in tens of thousands of Irish homes. EPH builds programmers, room thermostats, cylinder stats, zone valves and Wi-Fi gateways that all talk to each other, so your heating and hot water finally run on a schedule that fits your day.

Done correctly, modern controls cut a typical heating bill by 15–25% — and they're the difference between a house that's lukewarm at 6pm and one that's at 20°C exactly when you walk in.

  • Two-zone & three-zone setups — independently control upstairs, downstairs and hot water (now required by Part L on new builds & deep retrofits)
  • Wireless room thermostats — no chasing walls, batteries last 2+ years, easy to relocate
  • EPH Smart App (Ember) — control your heating from your phone, anywhere in the world, with geo-location and holiday mode
  • Cylinder thermostats & immersion timers — proper hot-water control instead of leaving the immersion on all day
  • Smart TRVs — set a different temperature in every room, perfect for kids' bedrooms and home offices

Heating zones

Independent control of upstairs, downstairs and any extension — only heat the rooms you're using.

Hot water scheduling

Separate hot-water programming so the cylinder isn't reheating while you're asleep or at work.

Weather compensation

Pairs with modern boilers to drop flow temperature on milder days — quieter, cheaper, kinder to the boiler.

Mobile app control

Boost the heating on the drive home, switch it off from the airport, get alerts if a zone fails to fire.

Wireless retrofit

No chasing walls or lifting floors — RF thermostats bind to a single boiler-side receiver.

Part L compliance

New build, extension or deep retrofit? We design controls that meet Building Regulations on day one.

Boiler replacement FAQ

The questions we hear most often on the phone. Anything else, just call us.

How long does a boiler replacement take?+

A like-for-like swap is usually completed in one working day. Relocations, cylinder conversions or fuel changes can take 2 days. We confirm the schedule with you in writing before we start.

What's included in the €2,199 starting price?+

A new A-rated gas boiler, manufacturer flue kit, system flush, RGII gas safety certificate, warranty registration and full clean-up. Final price depends on boiler choice, position and any extra works identified during the free survey.

Do I qualify for an SEAI grant?+

Gas boiler swaps are not currently covered under the SEAI Better Energy Homes scheme — grants apply to heat pumps. We're happy to discuss whether a heat pump would suit your home as part of the survey.

Can I keep my existing radiators?+

In most cases yes. We power-flush the system as part of the install to protect your new boiler's warranty. If radiators are badly corroded we'll quote replacements separately before any work starts.

Will I need new heating controls?+

Building Regulations require a programmable room thermostat with any new boiler. We include a wired programmable thermostat as standard and can upgrade to smart controls (Nest, Hive, Bosch EasyControl) on request.

Which areas do you cover?+

Naas, Newbridge, Sallins, Kilcullen, Kildare town and the surrounding Co. Kildare areas. Free no-obligation surveys throughout this region.
