Why are my radiators cold?

Cold radiators have one of three causes: cold at the bottom (sludge build-up — needs a powerflush), cold at the top (trapped air — needs bleeding), or completely cold (closed valve, seized lockshield or pump fault).

How do I bleed a radiator?+

Turn the heating off, use a bleed key on the small valve at the top corner of the radiator, hold a cloth underneath, and turn slowly until water (not air) comes out. Top up boiler pressure afterwards.

Can I powerflush myself?+

No — powerflushing requires a 200+ litre/minute pump and specific chemicals. DIY 'flushes' through a garden hose do not clear sludge and can damage the boiler.
